Waste Audit

Expert services, tailored to your needs.

Wasteco’s reputation as an innovator in our field makes us the right choice for anyone looking to begin, improve or expand their environmental program. We offer comprehensive waste audit services to support customers in improving the efficiency of their waste and recycling efforts, improve diversion rates and assist with regulatory compliance.

Step 1: Start with a Waste Audit

You can’t manage what you can’t measure. Wasteco’s Waste Audit and Environmental Services team provides a full range of services to help you understand and reduce your waste stream – and your environmental footprint. During a waste audit, our RCO (Recycling Council of Ontario) trained staff collects, sorts, categorizes, weighs and photographs the materials in your waste stream. Our waste audit report provides detailed information about your total audited weight by material and generation area, monthly and yearly weight projections, material capture rates and overall diversion rate. Annual reports help you measure progress over time.

We can help you identify:

  • Opportunities to improve diversion by introducing a new waste handling or education program
  • Problem areas in your building, helping you focus your efforts where they will do the most good
  • Inefficiencies which when corrected can decrease your waste management costs

Some facilities are required by law to conduct annual waste audits. Ministry of the Environment’s Ontario Regulation 102/94.

  • CONSTRUCTION OR DEMOLITION PROJECTS:   21,527+ ft2 (2,000+ m2)
  • HOSPITALS: Group A, B or F public hospitals
  • HOTELS OR MOTELS: 75+ units
  • MANUFACTURING FACILITIES:  Total employee hours = 16,000+/month
  • OFFICE BUILDINGS: 107,639+ ft2 (10,000+ m2) of floor space
  • RESTAURANTS: Annual gross sales of $3 million+ (unless located in a facility already covered by the regulations)
  • RETAIL SHOPPING ESTABLISHMENTS/COMPLEXES: 107,639+ ft2 (10,000+ m2) of floor space or where the establishment is responsible for their own waste management
  • EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS: Annual enrollment = 350+ students/year
Step 2: Follow up with a Waste Reduction Work Plan

Once we have conducted a waste audit, Wasteco will prepare a Waste Reduction Work Plan (WRWP) for your operation. Like waste audits, WRWPs are required for establishments covered by Ontario Regulation 102/94. The work plan is tailored to your facility’s needs and geared to achieving measurable reductions in your overall waste generation, with a focus on 100% recapture of recyclables. Our experienced environmental staff can also provide:

  • Building walkthroughs to ensure that the building is equipped with properly located and appropriate receptacles and signage
  • Education sessions for your employees, tenants and/or janitorial staff
  • Waste and recycling inspections to assess how waste reduction programs are being used over time
  • Tracking and reporting of waste reductions with Diversion Reports or Material Impact Reports
  • Planning of Waste Reduction Week and Earth Month events

Step 3: LEED Certification

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally acclaimed green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects must satisfy a range of prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification.

Wasteco’s in-house LEED Green Associates are familiar with BOMA BEST (Building Environmental Standards) Practices and GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark) and can help you implement environmentally sustainable practices and make progress toward LEED certification.
